Nestled on the Caribbean coast of Central America, this small sovereign nation is ripe in culture, warm year-round in climate and prime in beautiful tropical Belize real estate. Belize is the only Central American country that has English as the official language, making it ideal for USA citizens to visit, retire or purchase a vacation home. Until 1981, Belize was a colony under the control of the British Empire, when at that time the country declared its independence and became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The diverse culture of Belize includes Mayan settlers as early as the first millenium, Mexican and Spanish settlers form the early 1800s, US citizens (who began settling after the Civil War in the 1860's), Asians (from the 1900's) Central American immigrants (from the mid 1900s) as well as recent immigrants from the world over looking to own a piece of Belize real estate. Today, the culturally diverse country is witness to almost every ethnicity on earth, much like the 'melting pot' of the USA.
